Current events education

An element of the social studies curriculum designed to encourage student interest in local, national and world affairs and their relation to history. Taught at every grade level of social studies, current events relies on student reading of monthly, weekly and daily periodicals. Current events helps students develop reading skills, skills in map reading and skills in the use of periodicals and other reference materials. Current events can be an important pedagogical tool in teaching critical thinking by helping students trace the origins of many current events to a long, complex, interconnected series of historic events.
