Cumulation principle

A principle of teaching whereby the simplest materials are presented first, followed by materials of ever increasing complexity, but all based on an understanding of earlier materials. The student thus applies knowledge accumulated in each lesson to the learning of each subsequent lesson. The principle of cumulation is especially effective in teaching arithmetic and foreign languages.
