Advanced standing

Placement of a student at a higher than conventional academic level at college. Advanced standing often permits completion of college work in less than the usual four years. Freshmen at many colleges, for example, may gain advanced standing in various courses if they obtain high enough scores on the appropriate ADVANCED PLACEMENT examinations or COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM. Some colleges also grant advanced standing to students on the basis of credits earned at other institutions of higher learning or upon passing specific advanced placement exams administered by the college. A few colleges grant advanced standing on the basis of life and career achievements.
