Base-ten number system - American Education

The Hindu-Arabic numeration system by which all basic calculations can be performed mentally, without the aid of mechanical devices. Introduced into western Europe by the Moors in the 12th century, it was not widely adopted in continental Europe until the 17th century. It has yet to be widely adopted in the United States for metric measurements.
