Office of Economic Opportunity - American Education

A federal agency established by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to plan and coordinate programs to eliminate poverty in the United States. An element of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s WAR ON POVERTY, the agency was responsible for establishing such programs as Head Start and the NATIONAL YOUTH CORPS. The agency was disbanded in 1973, with most of its programs absorbed by other federal agencies.
